Changes to the inter library loan service

From January 2012, UCD Library can no longer provide delivery of articles to your desktop, via secure electronic delivery (SED). Delivery of articles will continue to be supplied in print. The loss of the SED service is due to changes in the terms of supply by the British Library, the key supplier of our inter-library loans. James

Superfines

UCD Library Survey

The LibQual survey, a qualitative survey aimed at assessing and improving Library services, will be running from the 17th October through the 4th November in UCD Library. Consisting of thirteen questions regarding the physical space of the library, the resources provided by the library, and the services provided by library staff, it will take approximately seven minutes to complete. The survey will be distributed to the entire University population and will measure levels of satisfaction among all our users. The survey is available here. James

UCD Library website makes the final of the 2011 Irish Web Awards

Time to take to the red carpet, the new design UCD Library website has made the final six nominations in the "Best Education and Third Level" section at the 2011 Irish Web Awards. The finals will take place on 22nd October at the Mansion House in Dublin. This is a great achievement to make the final six and is a tribute to all the hard work and commitment from the Library staff involved with this project. Best of luck on the 22nd. James

UCD Library has launched a new e-learning channel on youtube. The channel contains learning tutorials and videos with an emphasis on new users of the Library, however we hope that the content will have benefit to all our library users. The content ranges from how to find a book, how to print, how to find an electronic journal and you will also find a general overview of our services. We have also added many relevant favourite videos, all library and general academic related themes. You can subscribe to the channel and you will be updated with all new material added to the channel. As ever comments and feedback are always welcome. James

UCD Library new look website

Yesterday UCD Library launched its new website, located at the same URL http://www.ucd.ie/library/, our new webpages have a more modern design and are easier to navigate. The website offers a wide range of information: from opening hours to e-journals, from wireless access to citation styles, from book collections to EndNote support. The URLs of specific pages on the Library website have changed and you will need to update your bookmarks. However, there will be a redirect function for all old links which will bring you back to the Library’s homepage. We hope you that find the new website attractive and easy to use. Michael/James

Scheduled power outage - 29th June

Change to the External Reader access scheme

UCD Library offers two access schemes to external applicants, the External Reader and External Borrower. In response to reader feedback on our external reader access policy, and in order to enable all year round access, we have introduced a more flexible system. Starting from the 1st June 2011 the scheme will allow access for a maximum of three months at a time, during four set time periods: (June to August), (Sept to Nov), (Dec to Feb), (Mar to May). The cost will be €35.00 for a graduate and €70.00 for a non graduate and will be the same at any stage when you start during each time period. James

A decision has been made to close the Belfield campus on Saturday 23rd April to facilitate the rescheduled UCD Ball. Unfortunately this has meant that the James Joyce Library will now have to close on this date. JJL Group Study Area on Level 1

In the lead up to the summer exmas, we will extend the number of group study spaces available by designating the area overlooking the lake on Level 1 of the Library to Group Study. There are 6 stations available for group study on Level 1. The places do not need to be booked so students can use whatever stations are available. Talking is permitted, but we would ask you to be aware of your fellow students using the area, and so please keep the volume low. Normal Library regulations apply in this area. UCD Library is offering a number of training sessions for Endnote X2 for PC and Endnote Web throughout Semester 2 2010/2011. This 1 hour session aims to provide participants with an introduction to EndNote X2 or EndNote Web, respectively. By the end of the session participants: will know how to create an EndNote library; will be able to populate their library with manual references and imported references from library catalogues and databases; will be able to demonstrate how to cite references & create bibliographies in a Word document using the references stored in an EndNote library. QR Codes

You may have seen them on bus stops or popping up in the newspapers and wonder what they are, well the answer is QR Codes. From today you will now find them in UCD Library!! So what are they I hear you ask? Well the image attached represents a URL (in this case it is the url to the 4-Here Collection webpage). The idea is that instead of trying to write down a url, you can capture the image using your mobile phone and you will then be taken directly to the url, you can then bookmark the webpage if required. So what do I do next? The first thing you need to do is to download and install a QR Code Reader. To do this your phone must have an internet browser and a camera. Type "QR Code Reader" into Google along with your mobile phone brand, to find a compatible reader e.g. Kawya, Beetagg, Quickmark, Nokia Barcode Reader. Download and install the QR Code Reader and use the application scanner to capture the QR Code. Give it a try and let us know what you think. Send your feedback to james.molloy@ucd.ie and I will try and answer any questions that you have. So far we are testing the url on the 4-Here collection webpage, however the hope will be to expand the QR codes to other services throughout the library and possibly onto our catalogue records. The photo shows UCD personnel discussing the transfer with IFC personnel The image above shows one of Eugene O’Curry’s notebooks To mark the 75th anniversary of the foundation of the Irish Folklore Commission, UCD library will host an exhibition of folklore related material from UCD Special Collections, UCD Archives and the National Folklore collection. The National Folklore collection was transferred to UCD in 1970 when the Department of Irish Folklore was established. It contains all the material collected by those employed by the Folklore Commission, including stories, music and photographs. UCD Archives contains much material on the transfer of the collection to UCD and material on the establishment of the Department of Irish Folklore. UCD Special Collections contains folklore related material collected by antiquarians like Eugene O’Curry in the 19th century. The exhibition will display material from all three repositories. The exhibition was opened by Mary Hanafin T.D., Minister for Tourism Culture and Sport, on the 21st September and will run until the end of November. New Escalators in the James Joyce Library

The James Joyce Library is an extremely busy building and rather like the Forth Bridge by the time you get around it once with refurbishments it is time to start again. The Library Facilities Team work alongside their colleagues in Buildings and Services to ensure that all visitors to the library have a good experience. One of the major projects undertaken during the summer was the replacement of the escalators in the James Joyce Library. The escalators in the library move thousands of people between four floors and provide easy access to many of our readers who have disabilities. Not only will the new escalators look much nicer but they will be far quieter. The escalators that have been chosen will be energy efficient and they will have several useful functions on them. Installing escalators is a huge job and the contractors worked with us for a total of nine weeks. Escalator facts The existing escalators are critical for the smooth operation of the library, transporting the bulk of students and staff up and down the building. The three main reasons to replace the units were: 1. Life Cycle Replacement – the existing units, whilst serving the Library well over the past 25 years, have reached the end of their serviceable life. Breakdowns were increasing and spare parts being obsolete were increasingly difficult to source resulting longer down times to repair. 2. Noise – The age of the units and subsequent wear and tear had increased the ambient noise of the units measuring 67db. The new units will have a maximum noise level of 52db. 3. Energy Efficiency – the new units are considerably more energy efficient and incorporate the latest technology including low energy motors and crawl mode. We expect an energy saving target of 30% to 40% which will have a significant impact on the existing library energy consumption. The unveiling of the escalators took place on Monday 9th August, the entire project took a total of nine weeks and was a collaboration between the contractors Schindler, UCD Buildings and Services and UCD Library. The project was financed and managed by UCD Buildings and Services. We would like to thank everyone involved with the project, the work was completed with minimum disruption to the Library service and surroundings, and finally a special thank you to all our readers and staff for their patience during the summer. The end result is a state of the art, energy efficient, virtually silent and somewhat futuristic escalators. Featured in the photo are the first students to use the new escalators after the official cutting of the ribbon, Master of Law student Ian Payne and Rachel Donohoe ( ALCID user from UL but did her primary degree here at UCD).

Summer opening update

Library Ireland Week @ your Library 8-13 March

Today marks the start of Library Ireland Week. Now in its sixth year, Library Ireland Week is an annual celebration promoting Libraries and Librarians nationwide. LIW is coordinated by the Library Association of Ireland. During Library Ireland Week 2010, hundreds of events will take place in public, academic, hospital, special, government and corporate libraries. These events will be free of charge and will include readings, exhibitions, book launches, author visits, competitions and recitals. LIW10 will highlight the important role libraries play in all our lives from early childhood, throughout our education, in the workplace and in lifelong learning. The theme for 2010 is @your library. . Further information including a calendar of events on the LIW website. We have several events on the go this week here in UCD Library. Monica Cullinan has gathered recommendations from staff and students on material, both print and electronic, that can be enjoyed in the Libraries of Ireland. You will find these from a link on the UCD Library homepage news section and they will be updated daily with new contributions. More staff book recommendations can be found on the UCD Library Facebook page, we will also add daily links with “vox pop” interviews with students talking about their experiences of UCD Library and also some book recommendations. To view these you need to become become a fan of UCD Library on Facebook, by signing up to Facebook and searching for UCD Library and then clicking on the “become a fan” option (already 1455 fans have signed up). We have an eye catching promotional display on Level 1 of the JJL entitled “5 A Day – 5 Essential Tips to Help You get the Best from Your Library”. The display includes laminated posters plus a laptop showing the presentation on a loop. We also have other Library information material the Library Ireland Week official poster and bookmarks. 9,700 Irish Lives! The Dictionary of Irish Biography

After twelve years in the making, the highly anticipated Dictionary of Irish Biography has arrived. Published by Cambridge University Press in collaboration with the Royal Irish Society, the DIB is set to become “the internationally recognised biographical reference work for Ireland”. An immense scholarly publication, the dictionary includes over 9,700 biographies of deceased, influential Irish men and women from all walks of life. It also includes persons born overseas who had noteworthy careers in Ireland. Entries have been written by over 700 contributors all experts in their particular field of knowledge. The DIB is on trial until Christmas and will be available via FindIt@UCDLibrary in January. Dr John B Howard - introducing the new University Librarian

Library staff are delighted to welcome Dr John B Howard to the position of UCD Librarian. Dr Howard began his new role on October 1st, 2009, succeeding Sean Philips, who retired last year. John comes to UCD Library after 30 years working in Harvard University and Arizona State University. An American musicologist and librarian, John Howard studied at Connecticut College, Bryn Mawr College, Pennsylvania, from where he received his PhD in historical musicology in 1983, and the University of Rhode Island. From 1979 through 1998, he held various positions at Harvard University, including Keeper of the Isham Memorial Library, Richard F. French Music Librarian, and Senior Lecturer in Music. Since 1998 John's work has focused on issues of computation and data, information and knowledge management. Positions at Harvard College and Harvard Medical School to 2004 focused on technology administration and research computing. From 2004 to 2009, he served as Associate Dean of Libraries and Professor of Informatics at Arizona State University, where he was responsible for the planning and administration of digital library services and all library technology functions. He continues to serve as adjunct Professor of Informatics at Arizona State University's School of Human Evolution and Social Change. Previously, John served as head of the U.S. Working Group of the Repertoire International des Sources Musicales (RISM), overseeing the successful completion of the U.S. contribution to RISM Series A/II, an inventory of music manuscripts of the period from 1580-1825. He received a Special Achievement Award from the Music Library Association for his accomplishments in relation to RISM. John continues to serve on the governing council of RISM. John's research interests in music include the church music traditions of the early Evangelical Lutheran church and the history of music theory. He played a key role in the Society for Seventeenth-Century Music in conceiving and publishing the journal Seventeenth-Century Music. John is also on the editorial board of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach: Complete Works. John Howard will be based in the Librarian's Office of the James Joyce Library.

Laptop Loan charge

In February of 2009 we ran a trial period of a €1.00 charge for loaning a UCD Library laptop. After listening to feedback from our Readers we have decided to discontinue with the charge and from today laptops can be loaned for free from both the HSL and JJL. So far we have issued over 20,000 laptops in just over two years from both locations and we hope that this popular facility will continue to provide a high level of service to our readers. James

Great Library Moments in the Movies #2: Angels and Demons

It’s inevitable. From the moment Tom Hanks is led into the vaults of the Vatican Secret Archive—watched closely by a glowering official—you know that centuries-old manuscripts are going to come to mischief. It seems that, when sex and violence get boring, nothing rouses a film audience more than damage to books. (OK, so an archive isn’t a library. But it’s close enough.) The sequel to the dire Da Vinci Code is surprisingly watchable. Where the first film shows us a millennia-old cover-up being detected by Ian McKellen noticing that a disciple in Da Vinci’s Last Supper looks a bit girly, the plot of Angels and Demons is so convoluted that you don’t have time to notice the chasms in logic. Your brain might take a nap, but your eyes will have a blast. It’s like a trip to Vatican City without the danger of getting your pocket picked. (Did you know that the Holy See has the highest crime rate of any nation state in the world?) Which is all very well, but then we come to the wanton destruction in the Vatican Secret Archive. What is it with Hollywood and harm to library collections? Or do the movie-makes just reflect a wider social desire to get in amongst the stacks and wreak havoc? I’m working on a screenplay which will try to counter this glorification of library-wrecking. The working title is Dewey-Eyed. Picture the scene: a would-be killer, running from a vigilante, is chased into a public library. The two men of violence grapple with each other, knocking over bookshelves and racks of journals as they do so. So far, so ordinary. But in my film, the antagonists will come to their senses, realise what chaos they’re creating, give each other a long wary look, and—with an unspoken agreement—start clearing up. They get more and more absorbed in the work, discussing what books go on what shelves, and end up forgetting their feud completely. The last hour of the film is spent in an in-depth discussion of librarianship and information studies in the 21st century. I predict that word-of-mouth will lead to mobs at the multiplexes. Taking a very different approach to a conventional search engine, Wolfram Alpha is described as a "computation knowledge engine" and after the anticipation and talk it eventually made the official launch today. Not sure if it will be an alternative rival to Google, seems more of a complimentary tool for pulling direct and specific information without having to trawl through a series of websites. If we go by the Good Book, the first recorded act of any human being was Adam giving names to all the animals (Genesis 2:20). Therefore the act of naming is even more venerable and primeval than the act of scrumping that followed hot on its heels. Human beings have been giving names to things ever since. We even give names to galaxy clusters, which—when you think about it—is about as presumptuous as a flea naming the Himalayas after its aunt. The names of books, in particular, are endlessly fascinating. I once came into a possession of a volume called Canoe-Building in Glass-Reinforced Plastic, by Alan Blyde (1974). That has to be my all-time favourite, although I have a strange fondness for the dramatic This is Donegal Tweed (Judith Hoad, 1987). Honourable mention should go to a collection of train-related ghost stories entitled The Ghost Now Standing on Platform One (Richard Peyton, 1990). With more than a million books in the James Joyce Library, there must be some pretty intriguing titles out there. Here are some that caught my own eye, for one reason or another. It’s That Time Again…

Once again, the academic year is hurtling towards its breakneck conclusion. In today’s world, where information positively drips from the walls and gets beneath your fingernails, the idea of being stuck in a hall for two hours and confined to the knowledge in your own head seems a little like rubbing twigs together to make fire. Feeling depressed? The Reader Services blog has some examination trivia to cheer you up! * James McNeill Whistler, the famous painter of his own mother, missed out on a military career as he failed the chemistry exam in West Point Academy. “If silicon were a gas”, he wrote, “I should have been a great general one day.” * In an oral examination during his Oxford days, Oscar Wilde was asked to translate from the Greek version of the New Testament. Even after satisfying the examiners, he continued to translate, and when asked to stop, said: “Oh, do let me go on. I want to know what happens in the end.” Despite winning a double first, he declared that: “In examinations, the foolish ask questions the wise cannot answer”. Obviously, UCD wasn’t around back then. * In 1848, the Theological Tripos Exam in Cambridge University demanded that candidates give the exact date of the Flood that Noah escaped from in his ark. The answer required was 2348 BC—a thousand, six hundred and fifty six years since the creation of the world. * Winston Churchill passed the entrance examination to Harrow despite writing nothing for his Latin paper except his name, a blot and some smudges. “It was from these slender indications of scholarship”, Churchill wrote in later years, “that Mr. Welldon drew the conclusion that I was worthy to pass into Harrow. It is very much to his credit.” * And finally, an anecdote from the insanely prolific science-fiction writer Isaac Asimov. In his 1992 book, Asimov Laughs Again, he tells the story of a despairing student who wrote in his exam answer book, during one end-of-year exam, “Only God knows the answer to these questions. So you think libraries are dull, huh? Well, you couldn't’t be more wrong if you said that 432.445 was the sub-division of the Dewey decimal code that pertained to freshwater mollusc's. Here are some mind-bending, eye-opening library facts! • Before Hulagu Khan’s attack on Baghdad in 1258, he told his Mongols to “spare none…save for the keepers of the library”! • In 1949, Samuel L. Goldwyn asked the library of Trinity College Dublin to lend him the actual Book of Kells for his now-forgotten historical film, The Viking Invasions. The request was denied. • To this day, Utah libraries refuse to stock books by Arthur Conan Doyle, because of his unflattering portrayal of Mormonism in the Sherlock Holmes story A Study of Scarlet. • When a particularly devout librarian reproached Mark Twain for returning a book overdue, he is reputed to have replied: “Your Saviour has been overdue for some two thousand years, but you don’t complain about him, do you?” • For several decades, speaking the title of Tom Brown’s Schooldays was considered unlucky by Ontario librarians in the same way that saying “Macbeth” is taboo in the theatre business. It was referred to as “the schoolboy book” instead. It is believed that the superstition began when two librarians, in the same month, suffered heart attacks while lending out this book. • The smallest public library in the world is Horam County Library in Maryland, America. It is located behind the counter of a drugstore and contains fewer than fifty books! • A librarian in Suffolk taped a cheque for a hundred pounds between page 188 and 189 of his library’s copy of Finnegan's Wake in 1984. It was still there ten years later…despite the book being borrowed over a hundred times in that period! • Aficionados of the board game Cluedo claim that Dr. Black is found dead in the library more often than in any other room, and that the trend spookily bucks the law of averages. • Stephen Spielberg had the idea for Indiana Jones when he saw a man in earth-stained clothes and a battered fedora borrowing a thick tome about Aztec ruins at his local library. • Sigmund Freud, in his famous Interpretation of Dreams, claims that dreaming about a library is a sign of “a narcissistic-sadistic complex”! • In a 2002 psychological study at the University of Minnesota, students were shown mugshots of workers from different occupations and asked to rate their attractiveness. Librarians finished top…ahead of actors and models! • As far as we know, the most-borrowed library book in the world which is still in circulation is a 1930 edition of The House at Pooh Corner belonging to New Plymouth City Library, New Zealand. Great Library Moments in the Movies #1:

This must be one of the most horrifying library-based films ever. Today’s students will be shocked by the haircuts and lack of mobile phones (it’s a terrifying thought that people were once actually uncontactable for long periods of time). But there are even more disturbing aspects of the Breakfast Club. Not only are the five naughty teenagers forced to do detention in a library—which is surely a bit like being sent to Disney world for manslaugher—but their behaviour there makes the goriest scenes of Tarantino seem like Mary Poppins. Shelves are shaken, books are torn, doors are vandalised, and surely any librarians who caught it in the cinema were stretchered out around the hour mark. If the James Joyce Library ever acquires a copy of this monstrous film, it will have a running time of fifteen minutes or so after the potential library adverse cuts have been made. Having said all that, one can’t help admiring the library of Shermer High School. What rueful memories it evokes of my own secondary school’s library, with its complete (gilt-edged) set of the novels of Canon Sheenan (heard of him?), the clouds of dust (and stares of disbelief) when anybody pulled a book off a shelf, and the single P.G. Wodehouse novel that eased me through so many free classes! The Breakfast Club didn’t know their own luck, which only makes me wish more fervently that Paul Gleason had locked the narcissistic little brats in the school boiler room. Hey, hey, hey, hey, indeed. Only simple minds could be detained by this library-hostile trash. Watch this space for some (hopefully) some less infuriating library moments in the movies. During Library Ireland Week 2-8 March 2009, we interviewed several UCD Library readers to ask their opinions on the Library services and information searching tips that they may have for new students to the college. UCD Library on Facebook reaches 1000 fans!!

Since the launch of the UCD Library profile in Facebook in July 2008, just over 1,000 people have become fans of the Library. To join you will need to be a member of Facebook and then search for UCD Library, you can then sign up to become a fan. James
